SUMMARY:1923: Race\, Empire\, and Settler Colonialism Across the Pacific
DESCRIPTION:1923: Race\, Empire\, and Settler Colonialism Across the Pacific is a free online symposium that will bring together Transpacific and Pacific Studies scholars to reflect on\, grapple with\, and discuss the contemporary significance of racial exclusion during the 1920s in North America and around the world. This cross-disciplinary symposium will synthesize contemporary and historical perspectives along with global and regional perspectives to shed light upon how this era of racial exclusion resonates into present-day issues of race\, empire\, colonialism\, and discrimination. \nThe half-day symposium consists of three hour-and-a-half-long moderated panel sessions\, including a question and answer period. The symposium is a joint initiative between the University of British Columbia’s Initiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian Studies (INSTRCC)\, as part of the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement (ACRE)\, and the University of Toronto’s Dr. David Chu Program in Asia-Pacific Studies. DESCRIPTION:beyond the accident of time \nin memory of the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada\nChinese Gardens at the Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre\n180 King Street\n1 July 2023\n7:30PM\nand other outdoor pop-up locations:\nJune 30: 7pm at the Louis Riel Statue at the Legislature\nJuly 1: 6:30pm at Stephen Juba Park \nPerformed by Angie Mojica\, Anny Chen\, Bailey Chin\, Brady Barrientos\, GiUng Lee\, Johanna Hildebrand\, John Hirst Anderson\, Kris Cahatol\, Matthew Knight\, Queveen Arcedo\, Xi Yin \nCurated and directed by Sasha Amaya & Naomi Woo \nSupported by the Winnipeg Arts Council \n\nprogramme\nLeilehua Lanzilotti beyond the accident of time (2019) \nAshley Au Never Forget July 1st (2023) \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n100 years ago\, on July 1\, 1923\, the Chinese Immigration Act or “Chinese Exclusion Act” was passed by the Canadian Government. Among other damaging consequences\, the law greatly restricted Chinese immigration into Canada and divided hundreds of families. It was only repealed in 1947. During the 23 years the act was in place\, Chinese communities in Canada referred to July 1 as “Humiliation Day”. \nWinnipeg-based artist Ashley Au has been commissioned to create a new work of choral music to bring to life protest lyrics against the Act penned by an unknown author in 1923 and published in the Vancouver Baak Yeung Lau Bookstore. This archival material was recovered as part of The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act project. Our performance of the piece follows shortly in the footsteps of its world premiere in Ottawa on June 23 as part of the Senate of Canada’s National Remembrance Event. \nThat the act was passed on the anniversary of Canadian confederation—now commonly known as Canada Day\, but previously known as Dominion Day—was not an accident\, but part of the government’s pursuit of the White Canada policy. This fact resonates with more recent movements to expose the white supremacist underpinnings of the Canadian government by boycotting celebrations of Canada Day. Led by Indigenous groups\, #CancelCanadaDay trended on social media after the discovery of thousands of unmarked graves at residential schools in 2021\, and sparked widespread conversations about the genocide of Indigenous people undertaken by the Canadian government over the course of many decades. \nWe see these links as an opportunity for open conversation about the ongoing implications of colonisation and white supremacy in Canada\, and our performance as an opportunity for solidarity and connection across communities. \nThe performance also features beyond the accident of time\, a work for voices and bells\, by Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) composer Leilehua Lanzilotti\, which was originally written for the sculptor Isamu Noguchi’s Hiroshima memorial sculptures. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nbeyond the accident of time — percussion and voices (2019)\nCommissioned by The Noguchi Museum\, open duration \nThis work honors Isamu Noguchi’s never fully-realized Bell Tower for Hiroshima\, 1950 (partially reconstructed 1986). The original bell used for the first movement is Noguchi’s Bell Image (1956–57). The original bells used in the last movement are custom-made oversized sleigh bells—Slay Bells by Adam Morford of Morfbeats—two 6”\, two 5” and one 4” in diameter. \nThe premiere was part of a concert in celebration of the exhibition Changing and Unchanging Things: Noguchi and Hasegawa in Postwar Japan. As a whole\, the works on the concert titled Changing and Unchanging Sound\, considered being open or closed\, amplifying the sentiment of Noguchi and Hasegawa’s conversations about cultural exchanges. In working through sonic and visual forms of how things break up and how they’re put back together\, the works on the concert all explore questions about what it is to be human\, living in uncertainty and growing after destruction. “Lanzilotti’s score brings us together across the world in remembrance\, through the commitment of shared sonic gestures.” (Cities & Health) \nThis score was created for the premiere to give the performers specific guidelines for the bells chosen for this musical reconstruction. Noguchi imagined the bells for Bell Tower for Hiroshima coming from all over the world. In my piece\, I interpret the sculpture not as a physical object that would be built in Hiroshima\, but as a sonic concept that could be recreated by bells around the world. As we listen and recreate this space for reflection\, we honor and remember what the sculpture represents. This initiative aims to recognize historic discrimination against individuals of Chinese descent in Burnaby\, while also promoting reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community. \nThe primary objective of this project is to acknowledge and apologize for past injustices\, fostering a greater understanding and healing within the community. By amplifying the voices and significant contributions of Chinese Canadians\, the City of Burnaby acknowledges their substantial role in the growth of the city over the past century. \nIn alignment with these goals\, this public art installation will be created\, serving as a medium for reflection and dialogue. The art installation will take the form of an ice wall\, symbolizing the barriers that were once erected against the Chinese community. DESCRIPTION:OTTAWA\, June 5\, 2023 – The Senate of Canada will host “Reflections on Exclusion: An Exhibition on the Chinese Immigration Act\, 1923” from Tuesday\, June 6 to Friday\, June 23. The exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of this discriminatory law\, also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act\, and gives voice to Chinese-Canadians impacted by it. The exhibition is open to the public and is free of charge. Visitors can register for a Senate of Canada Building visitor pass. \nThe exhibition features Chinese Immigration Certificates and key parliamentary documents tracing the path of the Act. Among the highlights is a unique installation by acclaimed artist Don Kwan\, and a collage of portraits\, each telling a personal story of struggle\, resilience\, and perseverance. \nWith its roots in a series of racist laws passed by the Government of Canada from 1885\, the Chinese Immigration Act severely limited Chinese immigration and created a climate of fear among the Chinese in Canada. This exhibition serves as a tangible link to that past and a call for vigilance against modern forms of exclusion. \nHosted by the Senate of Canada\, which bears joint responsibility (together with the House of Commons) for passing the Chinese Exclusion Act\, the exhibition is as much a tribute to the courage of Chinese-Canadians as it is a reflection on how lawmakers can err in profound ways. \nThe exhibition is curated by Jiaqi Wu from the office of Senator Yuen Pau Woo\, with the support of the Offices of the Speaker of the Senate of Canada and the Black Rod\, the Chinese Canadian Museum (Vancouver)\, the Library of Parliament\, and the Canadian Museum of History. \nThe exhibition is one of numerous events and activities across Canada to mark the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Exclusion Act\, including a National Remembrance Ceremony that will be held in the Senate of Canada on 23 June 2023\, in partnership with Action! SUMMARY:Opening Reception – Longing Belonging\, 100 Years 100 Stories
DESCRIPTION:Come out to the Varley Art Gallery of Markham on Saturday\, May 13\, and celebrate the opening of Longing Belonging\,100 Years 100 Stories curated by Long Time No See. This free public event will feature a ceremonial lion dance performance\, artist tours\, refreshments\, and more. \nLong Time No See is a collective of friends\, artists and educators\, is very interested in the untold stories of identity\, place\, traditions and people in community. Central to our work is the notion of Belonging. Centred in Toronto\, we strive to honour our ancestors by sharing and teaching the stories of how Chinatown came to be\, the histories that have been erased\, and our responsibilities to act in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. \nOver the last few decades immigration has increased to suburban areas: Scarborough\, Markham\, Richmond Hill\, while bypassing the older downtown Chinatowns. DESCRIPTION:嚮往與歸屬，百年移民故事\n2023年5月13日至9月4日 \n“嚮往與歸屬，百年移民故事”是由“冇見好耐”組織的社區展覽。以《排華法案》一百週年為契機，展覽探討了加拿大殖民史的陰暗面。通過深入萬錦市社區，“冇見好耐”成員對本地居民就歸屬感進行了採訪和拍攝，並徵集了本次展覽中呈現的照片和故事。 2023年也是《威廉姆斯條約》簽署一百週年——這部由加拿大政府和七個第一民族簽署的官僚法案將安大略省南部的最後領土主權移交給了加拿大政府，被移交的區域就包括了如今瓦利藝術館所在的這片土地。 \n通過此次活動，“冇見好耐”邀請我們反思： 我們在這片土地上如何自處？我們記住了什麼，又遺忘了什麼？我們在和解中扮演什麼樣的角色？我們又該如何生根？ \n“嚮往與歸屬，百年移民故事”由萬錦市瓦利藝術館與豐業銀行CONTACT攝影節合作展出，由“冇見好耐”策劃，並由Brenda Joy Lem和Anik Glaude協調開展。本次展覽由加拿大藝術委員會、安大略藝術委員會、萬錦市Varley-McKay藝術基金會以及萬錦市政府共同資助。

SUMMARY:Henry Tsang: The 1907 Anti-Asian Riots in Vancouver
DESCRIPTION:What happened in 1907 that led to racist and violent demonstrations against the Asian immigrant communities in Vancouver? How can we make sure something like it doesn’t happen again? \nBased on his 360° Riot Walk\, Henry Tsang has curated a book that combines essays and photography to shine a light on the darkness of Vancouver’s past and its uncertain future: White Riot.  \nHenry Tsang will be in conversation with two contributors from the book: community organiser Melody Ma and educator karine 吳玨穎. Join them for a powerful conversation about community\, solidarity and resistance. \nHenry Tsang is an artist who explores the spatial politics of history\, language\, community\, food\, and cultural translation in relationship to place. His artworks take the form of gallery exhibitions\, 360-degree video walking tours\, curated dinners\, and public art. Henry teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. \nMelody Ma 馬勻雅 is a community organiser and neighbourhood advocate for Vancouver’s Chinatown. She led a campaign called #SaveChinatownYVR that helped defeat a controversial development project at 105 Keefer\, and coordinated the Chinatown Summer Events series as a way for the community to reclaim space. Melody is a member of VPL’s Board of Trustees. \nkarine 吳玨穎 (she/佢) is an uninvited immigrant-settler-occupier un/re-learning on the stolen and shared lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish)\, Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. DESCRIPTION:Gallery 101 presents: After Exclusion\, Happy Fruit by Ed Kwan & Don Kwan\nMay 6 – June 10 2023\n280 Catherine Street\, Ottawa \nAfter Exclusion\, Happy Fruit by queer Chinese-Canadian brothers Ed Kwan (aka China Doll) and Don Kwan explores two centenary legacies. The first: the federal government of Canada’s racist enactment of the Chinese Immigration Act on July 1\, 1923\, which effectively banned persons of Chinese origin from entering Canada for 24 years before it was repealed. And the second: the Kwan family’s own centennial in Canada – a legacy that began with the arrival of their maternal grandfather Chow Kwai Fong in British Columbia. \nThe exhibition delves into the legacies in two parts. After Exclusion reflects on the both the immediate and lasting impacts of discriminatory government policies\, including the Chinese Head Tax (1885-1923); the revocation of voting rights at provincial and federal levels from Chinese-Canadians and those of South-Asian origins  (1872\, 1907\, and 1920 until 1951); and the Chinese Immigration Act (also known as the Chinese Exclusion Act\, 1923-1947); as well as continuing effects of colonialism and racism. In contrast and defiance of these histories is Happy Fruit: one literal translation of gay ( 开心果 ) and a celebration the brothers’ queer Chinese identities and family history using language and play. \nThrough installation\, sculpture and performance\, Don and Ed challenge traditional cultural norms and reflect on the intersections of culture\, identity\, and history.  Their remarkable works embody the power of art as expression\, truth-telling\, and activism. \nAfter Exclusion\, Happy Fruit opens Saturday\, May 6 from 2:00-5:00 PM at Gallery 101. SUMMARY:"Two-Gun" Cohen & China Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Two Gun Cohen (Morris Cohen) was a realtor in Edmonton in early 20th century. In the dark days of racism against Chinese Canadians\, Cohen stood up protecting Chinese Canadians and performed as their spokesman. In early 1923\, the Chinese community in Edmonton informed Cohen of the “Act” for help\, who was then Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s bodyguard in China. Dr.Sun “dispatched a telegram on May 17\, 1923\, to the Minister of Interior requesting that discussion of the bill banning immigration be suspended…” \n \nA lecture led by Dr. George Dong\, author of General Two Gun Ma Kun- Dr. Sun Yat-sen’s Jewish Bodyguard\, a biography of an Edmonton-based Jewish Canadian\, who travelled to China and\nbecame a leading military advisor for the Chinese army and Dr. Sun Yat-sen (the national father of modern China). \nIt is the first historical novel in Chinese in memory of Morris Cohen. \nThis lecture marks the 100 year anniversary of Cohen’s move to China. \nGeorge Shouliang Dong\, M.A in English Literature from the University of Guelph and ABD in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta; is a retired Journalist for the CBC and RCI(Radio Canada International)\, and retired staff reporter for the BBC World Service\, and OMNI TV. \nHe is the recipient of the Daya Feng International Literature Award (2014)\, First Chinese Film-TV Literature Award (2022)\, Canada China International Film Festival Script Competition 2022\, and Alberta Newcomer Recognition Award (2022).

SUMMARY:SWALLOWING MOUNTAINS - Exhibition by Karen Tam
DESCRIPTION:As part of its Artist-in-Residence program\, the McCord Stewart Museum presents the exhibition Swallowing Mountains by multidisciplinary artist Karen Tam\, a tribute to the women of Montreal’s Chinatown from the 19th to the 20th centuries. In this immersive installation\, you will discover objects from the Museum’s collection\, works created by the artist\, objects belonging to members of the Chinatown community\, and photographs. \nThe exhibition explores the relative silence in public records and historical accounts of women in Montreal’s Chinatown in the 19th and 20th centuries\, as well as the discrepancy between the historical attraction to chinoiseries and Japanism and the reality of Chinese women living in Canada since the late 19th century. \n2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Chinese Immigration Act\, which banned virtually all forms of Chinese immigration to Canada. This policy\, combined with a head tax\, led to a strong imbalance in the proportion of women within Chinese Canadian communities\, who were prohibited from joining their husbands there. Despite their under-representation in the early 19th and 20th centuries\, Chinese women’s contribution to Chinatown’s vitality and economy was considerable. The exhibition Swallowing Mountains thus pays homage to the many contributions of women who have lived and worked in the neighborhood over the past century and a half. \nSWALLOWING MOUNTAINS\nThe title of the exhibition refers to the name that the first waves of immigrants from China gave to Canada\, Gold Mountain\, in reference to the gold rush and the opportunity to make a fortune in Canada. Over time\, the gold mountains of Canada’s El Dorado also became synonymous with the separation of families. Swallowing Mountains becomes a metaphor symbolizing the need to swallow\, one kilometre at a time\, the immense distance that separates loved ones in order to reunite them.
