By amplifying the voices and significant contributions of Chinese Canadians, the City of Burnaby acknowledges their substantial role in the growth of the city over the past century.\r\n\r\nIn alignment with these goals, this public art installation will be created, serving as a medium for reflection and dialogue. The art installation will take the form of an ice wall, symbolizing the barriers that were once erected against the Chinese community. Many came to Canada hoping to solve their misfortunes. Few did. Instead, Chinese immigrants faced hardship and racism. The reward they got for helping build Canada\u2019s transcontinental railway was a series of discriminatory laws and head taxes, and eventually the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1923.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>One hundred years later, you can read in the September Kayak about how these unwanted non-citizens struggled to survive and eventually thrive. \u201cBeyond Gold Mountain: Canadians of Chinese Ancestry\u201d is a rare nugget of a magazine, showcasing little-known truths about our nation\u2019s story.
