The City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Village Museum are collaborating closely with our team to carry out a project that commemorates the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923. This initiative aims to recognize historic discrimination against individuals of Chinese descent in Burnaby, while also promoting reconciliation with the Chinese Canadian community.
The primary objective of this project is to acknowledge and apologize for past injustices, fostering a greater understanding and healing within the community. By amplifying the voices and significant contributions of Chinese Canadians, the City of Burnaby acknowledges their substantial role in the growth of the city over the past century.
In alignment with these goals, this public art installation will be created, serving as a medium for reflection and dialogue. The art installation will take the form of an ice wall, symbolizing the barriers that were once erected against the Chinese community. As the ice melts, it represents the hope for a brighter future and signifies the dismantling of these discriminatory barriers.
Through this collaborative effort, the City of Burnaby and the Burnaby Village Museum aspire to create a poignant and impactful artistic tribute to the Chinese Canadian community, while also contributing to the cultivation of a more inclusive and respectful society.
